End-June figure includes 220 operational parks and 105 currently under construction.

Vietnam had 325 industrial parks on a total area of 94,900 ha as at the end of June, according to a report from the Department for Economic Zones Management (DEZM) under the Ministry of Planning and Investment (MPI).

The report noted 220 industrial parks were in operation on a total of 60,900 ha, together with 105 industrial parks in the process of site clearance compensation and basic construction, on a total area of 34,000 ha.

Occupancy reached 51.5 per cent overall, and 73 per cent at operating industrial parks.

According to the report, Vietnam also has 16 coastal economic zones established on a land and water surface area of approximately 815,000 ha as at the end of June.

There are also two coastal economic zones – Thai Binh in northern Thai Binh province and Ninh Co in northern Nam Dinh province – which are under planning but are yet to be established.

The 16 coastal economic zones have 36 industrial zones and non-tariff areas on a total land area of 16,100 ha, of which 7,800 ha of industrial land is available for lease, accounting for 48 per cent of the total area.

The DEZM’s report also showed that industrial parks and economic zones have attracted 473 newly-registered foreign investment projects, with new capital and additional capital at existing projects totaling nearly $7.3 billion.

They also attracted 385 domestic investment projects, with new capital and additional capital at existing projects totaling VND114 trillion ($5.1 billion).

A number of major projects were registered for investment in the first half, including the KVT-1 tire project with total investment capital of $220 million from Kolon Industries Inc. at the Bau Bang Industrial Park in southern Binh Duong province, the Hoa Phat Group’s steel plant project with total investment capital of VND60 trillion ($2.7 billion) at the Dung Quat Economic Zone in central Quang Ngai province, and a $2.5 billion expansion to Samsung Display Vietnam’s factory at the Yen Phong Industrial Zone in northern Bac Ninh province.
